Fish glue - Evo

As its name suggests, fish glue is that which is extracted from the swim bladder – or even from certain cartilages – of sturgeon and some other fish.

Its use dates back to antiquity. It was put aside after the second war following the advent of vinyl and acrylic glues.

It is one of the best natural and ecological glues with slow setting, it can glue wood, paper, cardboard, fabrics and even leather. It is often used for repairing furniture, good quality musical instruments or for gluing porcelain or ivory. Fish glue is very popular with cabinetmakers during complicated assembly involving several parts because it gives time to adjust the assembly perfectly while being very solid.

It is reversible, that is to say that it is easily removable with steam. With the addition of pigment it can also be used as a binder in the preparation of paint or Gesso.

It will give you a bond strength of 3000 lbs per square inch and no stripper or solvent will dissolve it. It can be cleaned with water even when dry, sands and stains easily.

An equal mixture of fish glue and gum arabic (dissolves in water) makes a very good cracking medium for acrylic paints or milk paints. It also acts as an excellent pore sealer.
