The chemical reaction between the resin and the hardener is called exothermic. This means that the epoxy generates heat as it dries and hardens. When this heat cannot escape from the mixture, it intensifies, causing premature hardening of the mixture which consequently creates even more heat since the epoxy hardens more quickly under the effect of heat (snowball effect). The result of this heat build-up can therefore create cracks in the system once dried. This is mainly due to the temperature difference between the surface and the bottom of the system. To avoid this type of problem, the maximum casting thickness should never exceed 25.4 mm (1 in).
